Cold, often perceived as an uncomfortable sensation, can actually offer a multitude of benefits for physical and mental health. From blood circulation to stress management, let’s explore how cold can be an unexpected ally in the quest for a healthier life.
1️⃣ Improved Blood Circulation
Cold water immersion stimulates blood circulation by forcing blood vessels to constrict and then dilate again. This alternation between vasoconstriction and vasodilation contributes to better oxygenation of tissues and organs, thereby promoting optimal blood flow. Take a moment during your next immersion to look at your thighs. Very often, this circulation is even visible to the naked eye.
2️⃣ Reduction of Inflammation
Cold water has anti-inflammatory properties, making it an interesting option for relieving muscle and joint pain. Cold water baths can help reduce inflammation, providing natural relief for people suffering from various musculoskeletal disorders.
If you are an athlete, cold can help you recover after exertion. After intense effort, muscles may suffer micro-tears, leading to inflammation. Cold water immersion helps reduce this inflammation by constricting blood vessels (vasoconstriction), limiting blood flow to affected areas. Once the muscles are warmed again, blood vessels dilate (vasodilation), promoting the return of oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood, speeding up the healing process.
3️⃣ Energy Booster
The stimulating effect of cold can act as a powerful energy booster. Cold water baths trigger a powerful cascade of “pleasure” neurotransmitters secreted simultaneously, including dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins, which help improve energy and mood, offering natural revitalization.
Author’s Note: For my part, I always (always) burst out laughing when coming out of the cold. It’s a moment of lightness that surprises me every time.
4️⃣ Stress and Anxiety Management
Cold water immersion can have beneficial effects on mental health. By releasing different natural hormones, it creates a sense of well-being.
Hormones secreted
Release of Endorphins
Cold water immersion can trigger the release of endorphins, often compared to a “natural pain reliever.” These endorphins act as neurotransmitters that interact with brain receptors, reducing the perception of pain and creating a feeling of well-being.
Activation of norepinephrine
Cold stimulates the production of norepinephrine, a hormone and neurotransmitter that plays a crucial role in mood regulation. Norepinephrine acts as a stimulant, increasing alertness and enhancing energy, thus contributing to stress reduction.
Reduction of cortisol
Cortisol, often called the “stress hormone,” is released in response to stressful situations.
In fact, cortisol is released at the same time as norepinephrine upon immersion. The reduction of the stress hormone will be measured more in the long term, as regular exposure of the nervous system to small amounts of these stress hormones can strengthen stress tolerance over time. Cold water immersion is therefore a way to train the body to better manage daily stressors physiologically. Moreover, there seems to be a link between cortisol release due to cold exposure and an increase in the hormone melatonin at night, which allows for even more restorative sleep! Better sleep means better stress management, which ultimately leads to a reduction in daily cortisol secretion.
5️⃣ Calorie Burner
Thermogenesis, or the production of heat by the body, plays a central role in the calorie expenditure process. When the body is exposed to cold temperatures, it needs to mobilize extra energy to maintain its internal temperature.
At the same time, cold can activate brown adipose tissue, a type of specialized fat tissue that generates heat by burning calories. Unlike white adipose tissue, which stores energy as fat, brown adipose tissue has the ability to burn fat reserves to produce heat. This activation of brown adipose tissue is a process called cold-induced thermogenesis.
Finally, exposure to cold can stimulate basal metabolism, leading to an increase in calorie expenditure even without physical activity. Remember that basal metabolism represents the amount of energy the body spends at rest to maintain vital functions such as breathing, blood circulation, and temperature regulation.
Although cold is often seen as something to avoid, it actually holds surprising benefits for both physical and mental health. From improving blood circulation to managing stress, reducing inflammation, and boosting metabolism, cold proves to be an unexpected ally in the pursuit of a healthier lifestyle. Embracing the chill can unlock a natural path to revitalization and well-being, showing us that sometimes, discomfort can lead to great rewards.
Tame the cold during your next stay
Workshop : Introduction to thermotherapy
Each day, you can participate in an introductory thermotherapy workshop, where you’ll discover the benefits of detoxification through sauna sessions and refreshing cold-water immersion. The experience culminates with a swim in a frozen pond, a unique moment where you’ll apply breathing techniques to embrace the cold calmly. Enjoy this special opportunity with the guidance of an expert, who will turn the experience into a soothing and educational ritual.
