What is acupuncture ?
Acupuncture is one of the treatment practices used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a form of therapeutic health care dating back some 5,000 years.
The theory behind it is that when the flow of energy is imbalanced or blocked, health problems can emerge.
How is acupuncture applied?
1. Initial assessment: clients fill in a questionnaire about the state of their health and why they are seeking treatment. The questions, which are confidential, cover what kinds of symptoms they are experiencing, as well as their medical history, lifestyle and daily routines.
2. A discussion between the client and acupuncture practitioner follows, to determine the course of action. This is based on the particular issue clients want to address – insomnia, weight loos, pain, stress, fatigue and so on.
3. The needles are inserted. The practitioner guides the ultra-fine needles very carefully into the selected acupuncture points (+ or – 20 needles). The recipient might feel a slight prickling or tingling, but any discomfort passes very quickly.
4. Resting and relaxing. The needles are kept in place for between 25-30 minutes. Some people find this stage so relaxing they might even fall asleep!
5. Removal of the needles. After the allotted time has passed, the practitioner gently withdraws the needles.
What are the results of acupuncture?
Due to the fact that each client has his or her own individual needs, the way that acupuncture is applied can differ. The physical after-effects are however, the same – deep relaxation, a reduction (or even disappearance!) of pain and/or discomfort, a feeling of calm, inner peace and serenity, emotional stability, a balance between the body and mind, more energy and a general sense of well-being.
